Beyond attending my regular Club, The Wayfarer, in Haswell Village every Friday night from 8.30pm, I have visited a great number of other Clubs and Festivals in the North East. The links below will take you to the Clubs Web-site (if they have one) or will give you contact details if they don't I can not be held responsible for any changes the organisers may make to their meeting times or venues, but these are current at the time of going to press. Monday: Easington My own club. Runs every Monday at Easington Miners Welfare Hall (Billy Elliot - Film Location) in Easington Colliery (Multimap Link). We run from 7pm and usually concentrate on a music workshop for the first hour or so and follow that with a singaround session. The beer is cheap and the atmosphere is welcoming. We run an anything goes type of club, so if you prefer rock, pop, blues or jazz that's fine too. Another great club which I don't get to as often as I would have liked. Great songs, Great people and always a lovely supper. Contact Dave (Hutch) Hutchinson 01325 315117 Stockton Probably the longest established Folk Club in the North, celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year, on the 1st April. A large room with excellent acoustics, a great ambience and a friendly atmosphere. Another great club for taking a first timer under their wing and making them feel like a professional performer. Meet at the Sun Inn on Knowles Street. Contact Ron Angel 01642 869697 Tuesday: Candlelight Each session meets at 8.30 in Newton Aycliffe. This tends to be one of the anything goes type of clubs, with Folk, Blues and Jazz willingly applauded. Specialist guest nights are usually on a Friday or Saturday night, as they like to try and reserve the Tuesdays for the regular Singers and Musicians sessions. The beer is cheap too. Great club for first timers, as you are made to feel welcome and the gang soon take you under their wings. However best to arrive early if you intend to play or sing during the evening. Admission £1 on Singers and Musicians nights and from £2 to £5 on guest nights. At the Beamish Mary in No Plce (near Beamish Museum) Contact Rita Mawson - 01207 504882 Thursday: Darlington Arts Centre At the Arts Centre on Vane Street every Thursday, alternating fortnightly between Singers and Musicians night and Guest appearances. Only been to this club once but it was a fantastic night with excellent local singers and a group called 'Roots Quartet'. If you ever get the chance to go and see these to girls with great harmonies please do so. Club meets in the Black Bull at Blaydon every Thursday from 8.30pm. The club has been established for 30 years this year and is planning a special event on the 5th June (more details to follow in the Folk Roundabout magazine) The club now has a web site at www.davylampfolkclub.co.uk which I am reliably informed is up and running. Brian and the rest of the regulars make you feel welcome and the Landlord has occasionally been known to sing a few. Good mix of Traditional songs and a few less traditional thrown in just for good measure. Web site http://homepage.dtn.ntl.com/brian.colley/ South Shields Meets in the South Shields and Westoe Club, corner of Dean Road and Sunderland Road, and has the claim of being one of the longest established clubs in the North East, I can remember going there, in the mid seventies, albeit not the same venue. The club has never really changed the people are still just as warm and friendly as they were then and the music is still brill.
